↑ TopWho We Are
We grew up on the flavors of Philadelphia’s 9th Street Italian market and the hoagies served by countless mom and pop shops throughout the city. Spicy red peppers. Savory Genoa salami. Fresh basil pesto. Hot roasted pork. Crisp breaded chicken cutlets. And most importantly, the soft, warm and delicious freshly baked bread. But when we moved to DC, there was no place quite the same.
So in 2008, we got sick of being frustrated by the lack of a great hoagie. If someone else wasn’t going to make an outstanding Philly-style hoagie, it was time we manned up and did it ourselves. We found a funky old building on H Street Northeast with caved in ceilings and busted up walls that we decided we’d call home. Out came the sledgehammers and we tore the place apart and built ourselves a kitchen and a dining room….and found a garage door to connect us to the street and our neighborhood.
We searched high and low for the best ingredients. We tested bread recipe after bread recipe looking for the perfect roll. We found ways to reuse old materials like wood pallets and recycled rebar to finish our space. We tasted different salamis, prosciuttos and cheeses. We breaded and fried cutlets. We made meatballs by hand. We roasted endless turkey, beef and pork, all to ensure we captured the flavors we loved in our youth and delivered the best possible hoagie to you. And we introduced many of you to that wonderful vegetable ‘broccoli rabe.’
In those early days we refused to compromise in anything we did, and that core belief lives on in everything we do today. We still roast turkey, pork and beef every day and we’ve found a supplier in Virginia who provides us with the best old world style, Italian style cured meats around. And we’re on a constant search to find the most outstanding, energetic, and courteous people to create a special experience for each and every customer and team member in our restaurants.
We’ve opened a few more restaurants since those early days, but we’re still those two guys from Philly who opened a hoagie shop because we wanted a place that would serve the food we love in a funky environment we’d want to hang out in. So whether you’re interested in trying our food, working in our restaurants, or just shootin’ the sh**, stop on by and say hi.

↑ TopGreen
At Taylor, we not only believe in providing the highest quality food and service, we also believe in serving as stewards of our surrounding community and environment. That means creating and maintaining a healthy indoor environment for our customers and staff as well as integrating eco-practices into our daily operations.
As our business grows, we will continually look for ways to be "greener" in order to minimize the amount of waste we produce, energy and water we use, and reduce our overall carbon footprint. To ensure that we are implementing the right green initiatives for our business, we've hired Green Living Consulting (GLC) - a DC-based company that helps businesses and households adopt eco-practices. They performed an independent assessment of our operations, for which we currently rank as "Bronze" level certified green business. We continue to work with GLC to implement additional green practices and products and move further along the green spectrum.
Our green mission is to demonstrate environmental and community stewardship by promoting a more sustainable operation that compliments our quality of service and helps foster social and eco-awareness in the community around us.
Green Initiatives To-Date
-
Reusing Materials
- Much of the original building structure is still in-tact and has been incorporated into the interior design. Wood and other materials have been reused in different ways - the original garage door now serves as a back patio gate/entrance.
- We’ve re-used wood pallets as shelving to reduce the number of trees needed to build our store.
-
Promoting healthy indoor air quality
- Our wood pallets are sealed with SoySeal - a non-toxic, non-flamable sealant that produces no fumes or vapors and is made from renewable resources
- We use green cleaning products - keeping our market healthy for customers and employees, and reducing our impact on the natural environment
-
Promoting healthy indoor air quality
- Energy efficient and Energy Start certified heating and cooling systems help reduce the amount of energy we consume daily
- Compact fluorescent lightbulbs are used where possible to save energy and reduce our emissions
-
Reducing waste
- Our fry oil is recycled with Greener Oil, which recycles 100% of its oil into biodiesel.
- Recyclable or compostable products are used where possible to reduce our contribution of waste to landfills.
- We recycle our bottles, cans and cardboard.
